LUCKY school kids had the chance to become firefighters for the day in 2007.

The youngsters, from St Mark’s Primary in Barrhead, visited the town’s fire station as part of a class topic called ‘People Who Help us in the Street’.

And the primary three pupils were all clued up when it came to fighting fire.

Class teacher Christine Healey, who organised the visit, said: “The firemen were really, really good. They gave a talk about fire safety and talked about what tools they use and their uniforms.

“Then there was a fire drill outside. They came round in the fire engine and acted out what happens in the case of a fire.

“They got to sit in the fire engine, they tried on the uniforms and had the siren on.

“Their favourite part was using the hose.”

The children spent the morning with members of Green Watch, who spent time outlining all the different aspects of their job.

Before the kids left, they were presented with an interactive CD, pencils and fire safety leaflets.
