TWO Barrhead supermarket workers raised £6,000 to help Glasgow Children’s Hospital care for kids with Type 1 diabetes.

Tesco employees Karen McLaughlin, 43, and Laura Wilson Ayre, 42, decided they wanted to give back to staff who cared for their daughters Amy, 14, and 11-year-old Jessica when the girls were diagnosed with the disease within months of each other in 2014.

The women were touched by the lengths the nurses went to when looking after their daughters.

So much so, they began planning a range of fundraising events with help from the store’s management team.

Staff at the Kelburn Street supermarket held a funfair featuring a raffle, a tombola, facepainting and fancy dress to generate the four-figure sum at the end of last year.

The two mums were joined by their children and colleagues to present the cheque to a Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity representative.

Tesco Barrhead recently raised close to £200 for the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK through a separate fundraiser.
