A CHILDREN’S author visited schools in Barrhead and Neilston ahead of World Book Day.

Youngsters at St John’s Primary and St Thomas’ Primary welcomed Glasgow writer Angela Proctor to their classrooms in the lead-up to the main event.

Designed to inspire kids to pick up a book and get involved in the adventure tales she has penned, Angela read a chapter of her new text Thumble Tumble at both schools.

As part of an eight-book series, the novel centres on a witch from the Isle of Arran.

Angela then challenged the schoolchildren’s imaginations by asking them to devise their own spells and potions to repel Rhino, a spike back giant who was trying to eat the main character.

St John’s Primary and St Thomas’ Primary pupils were only too happy to demonstrate their creative skills.

The Barrhead schoolchildren told the author they would use a "distractiotion" potion to deal with the creature.

While literary whizzes from the Neilston school explained a "giantbegone spell" was the only viable solution.

Speaking after the readings last week, Angela said: “I just love visiting schools to read to the children, particularly with World Book Day just around the corner.

“The children showed the most amazing creativity at devising the distractiotion potion and the giantbegone spell in relation to the 19ft giant in my first book.

“I’m always amazed at how their minds work.”

Angela has toured around more than 100 schools in her time as a writer introducing kids to her series of books.
