A NEW playgroup is giving Barrhead children the chance to develop their thinking skills.

Parents took their little ones along to Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire’s Market Place base on Kelburn Street for the first Lego and Board Games Club session.

Youngsters got to grips with various types of Lego and Duplo, as well as jigsaws and board games – all of which are provided free of charge.

Designed to offer kids an alternative to the sport, cookery and dance clubs which currently run in the town, the Lego and Board Games Club will be held every Saturday.

Organiser Georgia Baker decided to launch the classes to help children increase their mental agility, all while having fun in a friendly environment.

Georgia, who lives in Uplawmoor, spoke to The News after the opening event on February 25.

Explaining why she started the club, Georgia said: “I’m a parent and I’ve noticed in the area there isn’t much for kids to do that isn’t based around sport, drama or cooking.

“There is no club for children to sit down and play their own games together.

“It’s all really structured and adult-taught, whereas this group is designed to let children play their own games and develop their own mathematical or technical skills.

“It’s a drop-in club for families and children of all ages. We’re going to run every Saturday morning from 10.30am until 12pm at the Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire building.

“It’s a new club to give children in the area something to do on Saturday mornings as an alternative to all the current activities which seem to be sport, cooking or dance and theatre.

“If you’re looking for something different in a nice environment where children can play together then feel free to come along. It’s only £3 per child so it’s not very expensive.”
