A RACING driver from Barrhead has shown her worth on the circuit and is seeking support from local businesses.

Siobhan Martin, 24, is the only woman in her oval-racing class, and, despite evidence of equal driving ability, it is common that men attract more sponsorship in motorsports.

However Siobhan wants to buck that trend and make sure that her actions on the track speak louder than her gender.

Siobhan, who works for East Renfrewshire Council’s communications department, said: “Not many people have heard of this type of racing however it is huge throughout the UK and is very competitive.

“Racing is in my blood and the thrill I get each time I am on the track is unexplainable.

“Being a female in a male dominated sport can be difficult at times however it makes victory all the more sweet.”

Siobhan’s interest in racing began when she was a youngster and started in oval racing, following in her parents’ footsteps.

At the age of 12 she was already winning competitions.

She started out in the Ministox, which is a car recommended for children as young as 11.

She gradually moved on up in terms of racing classes and the power of cars that she was driving to 1400cc Stockrods.

Now for the second consecutive year, Siobhan is Scottish National Points Champion and has won or placed in a number of other championships including becoming Scottish Champion in 2015 and more recently second in the European championship at Foxhall Stadium in Ipswich.

Stock car racing usually takes place on a tight, looped track in stadiums and on grit or dirt tracks. However Siobhan is hoping to move on to circuit racing.

Siobhan continued: “I have been racing since the age of 12 and I have never lost the love or passion I have for the sport.

“Without the support from my sponsors I wouldn’t be where I am today and I am very thankful for all the help I receive.

“I am hoping to try out circuit racing soon and improve my chances of being noticed by larger organisations which will help progress my career in a sport that I love.”
