SHOPPERS at a Barrhead store fled in terror as it was raided by a woman armed with two knives and wrapped in bin-bags in a bizarre bid to conceal her identity.

A young child was only feet away as Denise Caisley stormed the Costcutters shop, in Cross Arthurlie Street.

Moments earlier, she had told one passer-by: “Back off, I'm going in to do that shop.”

During the raid, 32-year-old Caisley wildly stabbed at a till to try to get it open but gave up after failing to get her hands on cash.

She was soon caught by police and claimed that two mystery men had made her carry out the crime.

Yesterday, she pleaded guilty to an assault and robbery charge at the High Court in Glasgow.

A judge withdrew her bail and remanded her in custody pending sentencing next month.

Caisley had been spotted “creeping” outside the Costcutters store at around 7pm on March 1 last year.

She had her hands behind her back, with a blade in each.

Caisley's bizarre outfit to try to hide her identity saw her wear large black bin-bags and a mask to cover her face.

She also had on dark leggings and latex gloves.

When Caisley warned a man outside that she was going “to do” the shop, he yelled into the store that a robbery was taking place and told people to flee.

As the shop owner ran to get help, Caisley got behind the counter and initially tried to force open the till.

Prosecutor Mark McGuire said: “There was a woman and her young son standing waiting to be served.

“Caisley began slashing at a display while they were standing less than three feet away.”

The court heard that the mum, her child and others escaped as the “increasingly irate” robber wildly stabbed at the till.

Caisley then stormed outside and ordered staff to open the cash register but was thwarted when they refused.

CCTV footage that was played in court showed Caisley return to the shop and begin to tear covers from a cigarette display.

Mr McGuire added: “She then took her time, apparently perusing the selection, before removing a number of packets.”

The prosecutor said Caisley then “took a moment” to decide what else to steal.

She eventually snatched alcohol before running out of the store, with the bin-bags flailing.

When police arrived at the scene, shoppers were able to tell them where Caisley had gone.

Officers soon caught up with Caisley, who was still wearing the mask and bin-bags.

Two knives were also recovered.

Caisley, of Barrhead, told officers: “Two guys made me do it.

"I'm sorry, it's not my fault.”

Caisley also pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner.

Judge Lord Boyd deferred sentencing for reports.
