SERVICES were held across East Renfrewshire on Remembrance Sunday to mark the area's fallen heroes.

Across the nation workplaces, schools, stations and streets fell quiet as the country paid tribute to its war dead.

Barrhead, Neilston and Newton Mearns all held separate ceremonies throughout the day on Sunday, November 13.

Residents, councillors, local dignitaries and veterans gathered together at these events to pay their respects.

In Barrhead, a parade left the United Services Club at 2pm for a remembrance service at the war memorial in Cowan Park.

The ceremony took place at 2.30pm, where Provost Carmichael, Lord Lieutenant Guy Clark, Kirsten Oswald MP and Tom Arthur MSP, laid wreaths.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Neilston parade departed Broadlie Road and made the journey to the war memorial adjacent to St Thomas Church on Main Street.

Another service took place in Newton Mearns where the local branch of the British Legion arranged for an event to take place at the war memorial at Mearns Cross.

Provost Alastair Carmichael and Vice Lord-Lieutenant Colonel Peter McCarthy, along with Kirsten Oswald MP lay wreaths during the ceremony.

Speaking about the services, Provost Carmichael said: "Remembrance Sunday is a very poignant day and gives us all a chance to stop and reflect on the sacrifices so many local people made during the world wars.

"It is important that we celebrate the lives of those brave individuals and learn lessons from the past.

"I'm honoured to have the opportunity to be part of these services on this national day of remembrance."

East Renfrewshire Council officers and the team in the Council Roads and Lighting Dept also illuminated the war memorial in the village of Neilston this week.

Neilston War Memorial Association chairman, Councillor Mr Paul O'Kane worked on the project for over four years.

The Parks Department crew also created new landscaping to make the Main Street "the heart and pride of the village of Neilston".
