A GLAMPING site could be created near the listed Caldwell Tower to provide “countryside accommodation for tourists”.

Plans have been submitted to East Renfrewshire Council asking for permission to develop land at Oldbarn Road, Uplawmoor.

The applicant, Jeff Askew, wants to install three “luxury glamping domes” for guests, with income used to “maintain and upkeep the tower”.

His application stated: “The proposed glamping site will provide subtle and discreet countryside accommodation for tourists visiting this area’s attractions on short breaks and weekend stays.

“This proposal will create a significant economic benefit to the surrounding area and local businesses and the restoration and maintenance of the tower itself.

“The site is situated within the existing woodland meaning it is out of sight and does not harm any views of the tower or surrounding area.”

If approved, the domes would be available to guests between March and November each year.

The privately-owned, 16th century tower would be maintained to “an appropriate standard through the use of income from the application site”.

Five car parking spaces would be provided on site, including electric vehicle charging points, and bike storage would also be offered.

No guests would be allowed “in or around the tower, however, they can view this from around the site”. The application stated the domes will be “well spaced” to “give each visitor a good amount of privacy”.

“The proposed site will be located in a tranquil green area, surrounded by fields and will promote rest to its guests to enjoy the rural location to its full potential,” the plans added.

“The concept of luxury glamping is now gaining popularity throughout the UK, with standards and guests’ expectations on the rise. It is intended by the applicant that this site will be amongst the best available in the area.

“Currently, there is little presence in the Uplawmoor area offering this style of luxury dome glamping accommodation. Therefore, we feel the site would be providing a positive alternative for visitors to the area.”

Amplified music would not be permitted and “party groups” would not be allowed to stay.
