A COMMUNITY radio station based in Barrhead will continue to have its finger on the Pulse for the next five years...after being granted an extension to its licence.

The team at Pulse 98.4 were delighted to be given the green light by regulator Ofcom to keep on broadcasting until 2024.

Pulse is based at the St Luke’s High School campus, not far from its previous home at Barrhead High, and provides an outlet for local news, as well as up-and-coming talent.

The station, which has been on air for 10 years, also supports volunteers of all ages who are keen to develop their skills and gain new experiences.

Gus Maclean, station chairman, told the Barrhead News: “The licence is an extension to what we’ve already got. Ofcom reviewed us and agreed to give us another five years, which is great news.

“We very much want to continue to be part of the local community. We have been engaging with a lot of the primary schools and high schools in the area, which is good for the pupils as it gets them involved with broadcasting.

“We want to emphasise that we are a local radio station. People come to us and we have an open door policy here, where we encourage anyone to pop in if they want a wee mention or if they have an event going on.”

Pulse has a varied output, including news, music, chat shows and sport sections.

It also operates a mental health programme that encourages people to focus on their wellbeing.

“We’ve had quite a few success stories here at Pulse,” said Gus. “For example, some former pupils from St Luke’s High continue to broadcast here at the station, which is great.

“At the moment, we’ve got many different shows going on, including my breakfast show. We also have a show featuring talented local musicians known as The Logans, who broadcast at 7pm on a Monday.

“There are a lot of people who have done a lot of good work at Pulse and they continue to do that work and we are really looking forward to the next five years as we continue broadcasting to the local community.”

The team at Pulse are always on the lookout for new recruits who would like to get involved in community radio.
