SCHOOLKIDS from East Renfrewshire took part in the final of a competition to discover the next generation of enterprising young people.

The Festival of Youth Enterprise Championship 2019 helps youngsters develop their business knowledge.

By advocating and adopting a ‘learning by doing’ approach and delivering accredited training programmes, the aim is to help pupils become more employable.

A team from Mearns Castle High, in Newton Mearns, was one of 16 from across Scotland to qualify for the final.

They dubbed their project ‘On the Go’ and proved their green credentials by creating stainless steel water bottles that keep drinks hot or cold over time, with the aim of combating the issue of single-use plastic.

The final took place at Edinburgh Corn Exchange, where the teams set up market stalls and gave judges a presentation on what they had achieved by showing their entrepreneurial spirit.

In the end, it was a team from Fortrose Academy, in the Highlands, who were declared the winners after impressing judges by developing a range of products, including a board game, to help people living with dementia.

The competition is one of the biggest highlights of the year for Young Enterprise Scotland (YES).

Geoff Leask, YES chief executive, said: “As the leading enterprise engagement organisation for young people in Scotland, we work throughout the year to inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise through our broad range of programmes.

“This event was an opportunity to celebrate some of the great achievements by young people, their educators and our volunteers. I congratulate all who participated.”
