D-Day veteran Gerald Fisher is being laid to rest in Barrhead today, as thousands of memorials for the landings are taking place across Britain.
As many members of the public are being urged to attend the service as Gerald, 93, is survived only by a few nephews.
Gerald was one of the first British Servicemen who landed in Normandy 75 years ago today – the day prior to the bulk of allied forces attending.
Serving in the Minesweepers, Gerald and his comrades risked their lives to make the forthcoming invasion safer for forces following the days after.
Gerald was awarded the Légion D’Honneur, the highest French military honour, for his contribution to the Normandy Landings.
The requiem Mass for Normandy Landing veteran Gerald Fisher will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on London Road at 12.30pm today.
Gerald will be buried at St. Coval’s Cemetery in Barrhead at 2pm.
Frank Sheeran, representative from St. Alphonsus, is urging members of the public to attend the service which will be held by Canon Tom White.
“Not only is it the 7th Corporal Work of Mercy to bury the dead, but it is also to pay tribute to Gerald who played such a significant part in the war effort.”
