FED-up commuters in Barrhead have slammed ScotRail after some peak-time services missed out on extra carriages to ease overcrowding.

Last week, the company announced that more carriages were being added to peak services on the Barrhead to Glasgow line, providing an extra 3,000 seats.

But, while the 7.26am and 8.32am services to Glasgow and the 4.57pm and 5.58pm trains to Barrhead are benefitting from additional capacity, there has been no extra seats for either the 8.22am or 5.27pm services.

This means the 8.22am service to Glasgow continues to operate with four carriages, while the 5.27pm train back to Barrhead has just two.

One angry Barrhead commuter, who asked not to be named, said: “I’m sure there are many train passengers who were looking forward to a more comfortable journey after ScotRail announced these extra carriages but it seems we’ve been let down again.

“They’ve added two carriages to some of the services but haven’t added any to either the 8.22am or 5.27pm trains, which are among the busiest.

“It means passengers on these trains are often packed in like sardines.”

East Renfrewshire MP Paul Masterton, who had campaigned for extra carriages on the Barrhead-Glasgow line, has also expressed his disappointment.

He told the Barrhead News: “Like many commuters, I was relieved when ScotRail said they were increasing capacity on the Barrhead line, so to learn that additional carriages are only on four services – and not even those that are the busiest – is incredibly frustrating.

“Constituents were rightly confused to find rush hour trains with no additional capacity. These are services where you are lucky to get on the train, let alone get a seat.

“In my view, these changes don’t deliver on the commitments that were made to me and passengers.

“I have asked ScotRail to review this as a matter of urgency.”

However, ScotRail bosses have defended their efforts to ease congestion on trains on the Barrhead to Glasgow route, adding that they have to “look at the trains available and best match this to demand.”

They added that, if they were to add extra carriages to the 8.22am and 5.27pm services, it would be “at the expense of other services at peak times.”

A ScotRail spokesperson said: “The introduction of our new timetable has allowed us to make best use of our existing fleet and make positive timetable changes.

“These changes have brought a boost for customers in Barrhead, with more than 3,000 extra seats being provided every weekday. It means that the increasingly popular services in the area now see most peak services having four carriages.

“We’re running more services across the network than ever before and every available train we have is out on the network to get our customers where they need to be.”
