AN East Renfrewshire race team left rivals trailing in their wake as they finished fifth out of 27 competitors at the Greenpower Programme East Fortune Race.

Combining pupils from different schools in East Renfrewshire, East Ren Green Team competed against teams from all over Scotland.

The Greenpower Programme, organised by DYW West (Developing the Young Workforce) and West College Scotland, challenged teams to build a F24 electric race kart from scratch.

It also challenged every team to raise the necessary funding to support their racing costs.

The first race of the year was at the end of March, with the teams having developed the Go Karts since October.

Bob Davidson, DYW West Programme Director, said: “Big thanks to all the organisations that support the Greenpower programme in the wider West region.

“This initiative has grown from a fantastic motor vehicle-focused learning experience to a potentially life-changing opportunity where young people are learning real-life skills that employers want.”

East Ren Green Team’s next race is on June 14 at the Grampian Transport Museum Heat in Alford.
