AN EAST Renfrewshire school has been praised for its ‘articulate, confident and ambitious children’ in a glowing report from inspectors.

Staff from Education Scotland visited Our Lady of the Missions Primary School, Thornliebank, in February and spoke with pupils, staff and parents.

The school received ‘very good’ and ‘excellent’ evaluations in two quality indicators and was praised by inspectors for the ‘very high level’ of children’s attainment in literacy, numeracy and science.

The report noted staff take very good account of what children already know before they start school in primary one and build on this through carefully planned interventions.

The school was praised for having an inclusive ethos and noted: “We observed children clearly enjoying being at their school.

“Gospel values and positive relationships permeate the daily life and work of this community of faith and learning.

“Children demonstrate a good understanding of how Gospel and school values are linked to the school house system and support them to develop and practise respect for themselves and others. They welcome the opportunities they have to take responsibility for their learning.

“They contribute ideas and make suggestions about what they would like to learn.”

Inspectors were also full of praise for the school’s approach to planning lessons for its 905 pupils.

The report added: “Commendably, the school plans very well across all areas of the curriculum.”
