VISH and chips, anyone?

Before you rush to complain, don’t worry – it’s not a misprint.

Vegan fish and chips is on the menu at one of Scotland’s finest street food showcases this weekend.

The Paisley Food Festival is back and new for 2019 is a fantastic vegan and veggie zone, with a mouthwatering range of plant-based food and drink on show.

There’s everything from vegan hangover food (mixed bean and lentil chilli, paella, mac ‘n’ cheese and, milkshakes), to crepes and ice cream and The Sly Fox will be bringing vegan Czech cuisine too, with goulash, seitan burgers and sugar free cakes up for grabs.

More than 40 traders will descend upon the town tomorrow and Saturday, including the Gin71 gin palace, British Street Food Awards finalist Ginger and Chilli and delicious desserts from Crema Caravan.

Other highlights include a demo kitchen with Masterchef The Professionals winner Gary Maclean and Matt Pritchard, star of MTV’s Dirty Sanchez and BBC’s Dirty Vegan cookery show.

Look out too for a range of kids' workshops and live entertainment, all taking place in the stunning grounds of Paisley Abbey.

Love Food Hate Waste will be on hand to provide advice at the festival to help prevent good food ending up in the bin.

Ylva Haglund, Food Waste Campaigns Manager at Zero Waste Scotland, explains: “A massive £1billion worth of food is binned from our homes in Scotland every year.

“Most of this is good food that could have been eaten and enjoyed had it been used up in time.

“Food waste also contributes more to Scotland’s carbon emissions than any other type of waste.

“To make it easier for people at home to tackle this, we’ve teamed up with leading chefs at this year’s Paisley Food and Drink Festival, who will share tips and tricks to show just how simple it can be to save food from the bin.”

Apple Oils Ltd will also be collecting waste cooking oil from participating traders at this year’s Paisley Food and Drink Festival, which will then be transformed into sustainable biodiesel.

The Glasgow-based company will filter the cooking oil and use a chemical process to turn it into biodiesel which can be used to fuel vehicle engines.

The packed programme for the two-day extravaganza also includes a visit from PLATFORM on Tour, who will bring some of Scotland’s best street food traders to the event, including giant Kata teepee tents, the PLATFORM DJs and cutting-edge cocktails.

Beer lovers will have the chance to enjoy more than 70 cask conditioned ales, bottled beer from around the world and vegan options in the Renfrewshire CAMRA Beer Tent.

Returning favourites include the south side’s Rum Shack, Babu Bombay Street Kitchen, Scozzese woodfired pizza, Fizzbuz prosecco van and the popular Bakery by Zique.

There are plenty of fun activities for kids, from chocolate-making and pizza-making to garden life hacks and science, craft and games workshops. Live music will include children’s favourites Sprog Rock, and Pulse FM will be hosting from noon until 9pm.
