A MURDER investgation has been launched after a man suffered fatal injuries following a disturbance in East Renfrewshire.

Officers were called to Roukenburn Street, in the Thornliebank area, at around 10.20pm last night.

Anthony Ferns, 33, was approached by a man who seriously assaulted him whilst he was sitting in his blue Audi A3 in Crebar Street at its junction with Roukenburn Street.

He managed to drive a short distance to his home address in Roukenburn Street and got out the car - emergency services were then called to a report of the man lying injured and attended, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem examination will take place to establish the exact cause of death, however police are currently treating the death as murder and a murder inquiry has been launched.

The suspect is described as white, aged between 20-30 years of age and between 5ft 8- 6ft in height. 

He was wearing a dark-coloured tracksuit, a light-coloured baseball cap and he ran off from the scene in Crebar Street. 

Detective Chief Inspector Grant Macleod of the Major Investigation Team (West) said:  “Extensive police inquiries are ongoing in the area of Crebar Street and Roukenburn Street at this time.  Officers are carrying out house to house enquiries and gathering CCTV footage from the local area to provide more information that will help us trace the man responsible for this vicious attack.

“The team of officers are also working to establish a motive for this crime.  They are currently piecing together the victim’s last known movements to find out as much information as possible on the circumstances surrounding this death.

“Understandably Mr Ferns' family are extremely upset and have been left devastated by this murder.

"We have specially trained officers providing support to the family and they are keeping them updated on this investigation.

“I completely understand that the local community will be concerned by this incident.  I would like to stress that everything is being done to catch the person responsible as quickly as possible.  Extra police patrols are in the area and members of the public are encouraged to speak to a police officer if they have any concerns.

“Finally, I would also urge anyone with information on this murder to contact us as soon as possible.

"Additionally if anyone who was driving in that area has dash-cam footage then I would ask them to contact us too.

Relatives have been informed and a full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
