FOUR venues in East Renfrewshire have failed to meet food hygiene standards, it has been revealed.

Between January and March this year, staff from East Renfrewshire Council have filed reports on more than 60 restaurants, takeaways, pubs, hotels and shops in the area.

Four of the premises were given an ‘improvement required’ rating, which means they failed to meet legal requirements set by Food Standards Scotland (FSS) in the Food Hygiene Information Scheme.

Clarkston was the worst offender, with two venues in Eaglesham Road making the list.

Chinese restaurant Mandarin and newsagent Para Para both failed to gain pass marks.

They were joined by Kebabish takeaway, in Newton Mearns, and Williamwood News, in Giffnock.

A spokeswoman for FSS said: “Where a business has failed to meet requirements, it is issued with an ‘improvement required’ certificate and appropriate action is taken to ensure public health is protected.”

A spokesperson for East Renfrewshire Council added: “Our environmental health team regularly inspects local food businesses and gives advice on hygiene practices where required. How often each business is inspected is dependent on the risk rating given to each premise.

“If a business is not up to the legal requirements, then inspection frequency is increased and, if necessary, legal action is taken to achieve compliance.”
