A TEAM of dedicated fundraisers were put through their paces as they ran from Newton Mearns to Barrhead to replicate the arduous journey some people make to get water.

In developing countries, people have to travel an average of 6km to reach fresh water.

And, to mark World Water Day, the Barrhead Travel crew took to the streets to run the same distance for charity Just a Drop, starting at the Newton Mearns branch and finishing at the Barrhead Main Street site.

A Team GB star was there to help them along the way, as the fundraisers were led by long-distance runner Luke Traynor.

Jacqueline Dobson, president of Barrhead Travel, said: “I’m so proud of the team who braved the rain and ran over four miles on World Water Day to help achieve this year’s target for Just a Drop.

“The support and donations from the whole Barrhead team have been wonderful, on World Water Day and on every other day where we push to help improve the lives of those who do not have sufficient access to fresh water or sanitation facilities.

“The team’s consistent commitment is admirable.”

Just a Drop provides safe water and hygiene services to communities across the world.

Barrhead Travel is currently sponsoring Just a Drop’s project at the Buwambo Health Centre, in Uganda, which is serving around 40,000 people who struggle to access the necessary water and hygiene facilities they need.

The event helped donations towards the project reach £6,200 and the team are hoping that will eventually become £23,000 through various initiatives such as bake sales, Munro hikes, all-day cycles and more.

Barrhead Travel’s previous project with Just a Drop raised £9,000, which was used to install a fresh water tank at a primary school in Songeni.
