RENFREWSHIRE'S MPs renewed their calls to put a stop to Brexit after rejecting a 'no-deal' withdrawal from the European Union.

In a night of high drama in the Commons, MPs surprised the government and voted by 312 to 308 to reject a no-deal Brexit under any circumstances.

The vote was one of a series last night, with MPs also voting to reinforce their decision and rejecting an ammendment to delay Brexit until May.

Speaking exclusively to The Gazette earlier today, Gavin Newlands said the vote summed up the 'chaos' of Theresa May's Government.

Mr Newlands, who represents Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said: "Last night’s Commons farce was just the latest example of how out of control the UK Government are.  Theresa May voting against her own motion minutes after yet another humiliating defeat summed up the Tories on Brexit – clueless, thoughtless, and useless.

"We are now 15 days from Brexit.  Thousands of jobs across Renfrewshire are at risk.  Our food supplies are at risk.  Our health service is preparing for the worst.  Yet both Tory and Labour parties seem more concerned with their own internal squabbles than for the well-being of the people who will be hit hardest by our leaving the EU.

"An SNP amendment on revoking Article 50 and respecting the wishes of the people of Scotland has been before Parliament for weeks now – it’s surely time for the UK Government to come back to reality and push the stop button."

Prime Minister May will make a third attempt to get her EU withdrawal deal through Parliament in the next week.

She told MPs that if her deal fails again to get their backing, a lengthy delay to Brexit may be needed.

Mhairi Black, who represents the SNP along with Mr Newlands, said: “The UK Parliament has rejected both the Prime Ministers dodgy deal and also leaving the European Union in a no deal scenario.

“Renfrewshire did not vote for Brexit. The Scottish Government and SNP MP’s have been ignored at every stage of the Brexit negotiations.”

The Paisley and Renfrewshire South woman added: “Staying in the European Union is the only logical way to prevent the damage that this Tory Brexit could have on Renfrewshire’s jobs, public services and our economy.”
