A LOCAL support group for people with Parkinson's is still enjoying some Christmas cheer in February - thanks to a Galashiels bar.

Niki's Bar was asked to provide the catering for the Borders Parkinson's Support Group's dinner during the festive season.

Bosses at the Galashiels pub accepted the contract but declined taking any payment.

And following up from the goodwill gesture, staff at the bar raised a further £300 to help support the charity during 2019.

Gary Hattie from the Parkinson's support group told us: "We are now in our 19th year as a support group and over those years, Niki and her son Norman along with Niki’s Bar staff and customers have been so supportive of our group here in the Scottish Borders.

"They support so many local charities - we are very fortunate and grateful to be one of them, but this was totally out of the blue"

More than 50 members of the Borders Parkinson's group enjoyed the festive feast, laid on by Niki's Bar, at the Focus Centre.

And last week Gary popped into the Balmoral pub to collect the additional cheque and present both Niki and Norman with certificates of gratitude.

He added: "Sometimes saying thank you doesn’t seem enough.

"The £300 cheque will help run the group during 2019 - we just want to let everyone at Niki's know that their support is appreciated."

The local Parkinson's support group meets on the last Monday of each month at Borders General Hospital's Chaplaincy Centre between 2pm and 4pm.
