WORK to transform one of Barrhead’s most iconic buildings into a new community hub is underway.
Local charity Include Me 2 recently reached a five-year agreement with East Renfrewshire Council to lease the James McGuire Building for £1 a year.
The organisation will use the building as a community hub for delivering activities to children, youths and adults with learning, physical and mental disabilities.
The primary focus will be a training and employability project that gives members the chance to gain retail and hospitality experience in the hub’s shop and cafe.
After receiving the keys from the council, team members began cleaning and redecorating the building – which has been vacant for five years – at the weekend.
Paul McIlvenny, founder of Include Me 2, said: “We’re planning to make some minor alterations, bringing the toilets up to standard and making it more accessible, but right now it just needs some TLC and elbow grease.”
