A MEMORIAL football tournament is to be held in honour of a teenager who tragically died last month.

Regan Murray was just 14 when he died at a house in Paisley’s Alloway Grove.
The popular teen played for East Renfrewshire team Busby AFC, which is organising a tournament in his name.

The event will raise funds for suicide prevention charity Papyrus.

Initially, eight teams were to take part in the tournament but, due to a flurry of interest, it is set to be expanded to 16 teams and played over a full two days, on May 18 and 19.

Regan had also played for other clubs in Howwood and Renfrew, with many of his former team-mates keen to pay their respects.

Busby AFC youth general manager Joe Noon said the tournament is a fitting way to bring together those who knew Regan.

He added: “It has been a hard time for everyone at the club, particularly for the younger age groups.

“Regan’s family are also still finding it extremely difficult at the moment.

“This is something we plan to do every year if we get enough interest. We are already speaking with the council about getting the pitches for longer due to the great response.”

Almost £6,000 was raised for Regan’s family in the wake of the tragedy.
The tournament will be played at Overlee Pavilion and Playing Fields and the cost per team is £150.
