A BARRHEAD student is set to embark on a lifesaving journey to Africa...and she needs your help to get there.

Nicole Lynch is hoping to travel to Tanzania, one of the poorest regions in the continent, where she will spend three weeks volunteering in a local cancer centre.

The trip will cost around £3,000, which Nicole needs to raise before she can travel, so she has launched a fundraising campaign in a bid to reach her target.

The 20-year-old is in her third year of a BSc Radiography (Radiotherapy and Oncology) degree at Glasgow Caledonian University.

For the past three years, her work placements have been at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, which provides cancer patients and staff with the most cutting edge equipment, treatments and surroundings to treat cancer.

But, next May, she has chosen to push herself and take on the lifesaving adventure.
And Nicole revealed the inspiration for her trip came from a colleague during her time at The Beatson.

She told the Barrhead News: “I actually got the idea from one of the radiographers I worked with and she inspired me to do it.

“She spent some time there and told me about the centre and the experience and that made up my mind.

“I am really looking forward to taking myself out of my comfort zone and getting to experience the other end of the spectrum.

“Unlike The Beatson,w hich has the best equipment available, the centre in Tanzania is not nearly as advanced.

“The hospitals in Tanzania have poor resources; even the most basic provisions such as water and electricity are limited.

“This experience will allow me to share my increasing clinical knowledge and skills and to contribute towards the care and treatment of those far less fortunate than ourselves.

“I hope my family, friends and anyone else, will consider supporting me.

“All donations will go towards the cost of travel, vaccinations and accommodation costs. Any additional money raised will be donated to the Beatson Cancer Charity.”

Nicole will be hosting fundraising events over the coming months. To doante, visit justgiving.com/crowdfunding/nicole-lynch-1
