A Barrhead church’s cup has runneth over once more after yet another successful fundraising event.

In what was their last coffee morning of the year, the Barrhead United Reformed Church congregation brought the community together for a day filled with tea, coffee and good company.

Due to the cornicing falling down in the Arthurlie Street church, which will be 175 years old next year, the congregation have been involved in a number of fundraising events in a bid to collect cash to repair their beloved church.

Taking place in the church hall, where worship has been held for a number of weeks, Saturday’s event saw a selection of delicious home-baked goods on offer as well as the chance to win a prize from a tombola.

The donations received ahead of the event also meant that two special hampers were able to be made up - much to the delight of those who managed to bag the baskets of goodies.

Overall the event raised more than £500 which will go towards the church’s fabric fund. Surveyors are currently looking at the cornices in the church to identify if it is possible to save the place of worship.

Church secretary, Rena Hannah said: “All in all, it was another successful coffee morning and there was a good turn-out considering there are lots of other events on at this time of year and people will also have been out doing Christmas shopping.

“We are a small group but very hard-working and are aware that any restorations to the church are going to cost big bucks so anything we raise from coffee mornings or similar event is going towards that.

“An end-of-month collection will also take place at the end of December for children’s hospice Robin House in Balloch.”
