Politicians opposed to plans to relocate Eastwood Leisure Centre have carried out their own public consultation, while calling the council’s into question.

In September, East Renfrewshire Council published the findings of a six-week public consultation, which showed 54 per cent of residents in favour of building a replacement centre on a new site, with Shawwood Park and Broomburn Park understood to be the preferred options.

However, East Renfrewshire MP Paul Masterton and Eastwood MSP Jackson Carlaw have released the initial findings of their own survey.

The Conservative politicians said they undertook the work after concerns were raised about the council’s own consultation, with many residents saying they were unaware of the possible development.

Their survey found 91.7 per cent of people opposed building a new leisure centre at Broomburn Park, while 89.5 per cent opposed building at Shawwood Park. The most popular option among the 887 respondents was to build a new centre on the existing site.

Mr Masterton said: “A new facility would be welcome but it should be on the existing site, not achieved by concreting over what little urban greenspace is left.”

However, an East Renfrewshire Council spokesman said no decision has been made on a potential site for a new leisure centre.

He added: “Councillors agreed on October 31 to a new study being carried out to look at the feasibility of a new leisure centre in Eastwood Park. Once this work has been completed, a further report will be considered by councillors.

“Since the previous consultant’s report was carried out, a number of factors relating to Eastwood Park have changed, therefore a further analysis and options for the potential for a new-build leisure centre on the park is being undertaken at this stage.”
