TWO generations from one Barrhead family were set to appear on stage together 10 years ago.

Eight-year-old Fiona McGregor and her grandmother Jean were busy rehearsing with the Apollo Players for a production of Oliver! at Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre, with their first performance taking place this week in 2008.

And talented Fiona, who was a pupil at Cross Arthurlie Primary, in Barrhead, was also to perform in the Pavilion’s pantomime, The Wizard of Never Woz.

Jean, who had joined the Apollo Players nine years earlier, said at the time: “I was in my 50s when I started.

“A friend introduced me to the Apollo Players and I also sing in the Barrhead Philharmonic Choir.

“The highlight of being part of the show is just being there at rehearsals with Fiona.”

Fiona’s proud mum Agnes added: “The wee one had her first audition when she was three, with the Apollo Players.

“Her first professional audition was for the Wizard of Never Woz this year. She had to sing and dance for that.”

She added: “She’s really excited about The Wizard of Never Woz. Her favourite is Stephen Purdon, from River City – that’s the only name she recognises.”

As well as Stephen, who took on the role of the scarecrow, the popular Christmas pantomime starred Dean Park, playing the lion, and Des McLean, as the Tin Man.

The role of Dorothy was won in an X Factor-style competition by Kelly-Anne Reilly.
