Renfrewshire South MSP Tom Arthur has given his backing to plans that aim to improve the experiences of LGBTI school pupils.

The SNP man said a new approach to sex education, while also tackling LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) discrimination in schools, will deliver a “more inclusive” education system.

Since last year, the Scottish Government has been working with the Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign to reshape lessons.

Now Education Secretary John Swinney has confirmed the government will fully accept the recommendations of a report by the LGBTI Inclusive Education Working Group, which was tasked with taking the TIE pledges forward.

The report outlines 33 recommendations on how the learning experience of LGBTI young people can be improved.

A team has been charged with implementing the proposals by the end of the current Parliamentary term.

Mr Arthur, whose constituency covers parts of Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, said:

“This marks a historic milestone in the ongoing drive for equality.

“I am proud to stand in solidarity with our LGBTI community to ensure young people across Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire receive the inclusive education they deserve.

“During Scotland’s Year of Young People, it is fitting for this SNP government to send a strong message of inclusivity, tolerance and respect to younger generations.

“Offensive, outdated views have no place in Renfrewshire or East Renfrewshire and the Scottish Government is clear that any form of bullying or discrimination in our society will not be tolerated.”
