THE Neilston community saved the day 10 years ago by rescuing a playgroup from extinction.
Just weeks earlier, a lack of funds had threatened the future of Neilston Playgroup, leaving toddlers and their carers distraught.
However, thanks to local businesses and families, a total of £800 was raised at the playgroup’s Ladies’ Night to buy much-needed new chairs for the youngsters, as well as paying for running costs and supplies such as paint.
Chairperson Jennifer Winning said at the time: “We made over £1,000 but, after we paid the DJ and the buffet, it came to £800.
“Everyone really enjoyed it – and some people who couldn’t get up the next morning enjoyed it too much!
“A total of £400 was made from the tickets sold. The rest was raised from the raffle.
“The Co-op store in Neilston did a fancy dress day, with a bucket next to the till for donations, and gave us £150. Powerwash donated £100.
“Award-winning artist Eric Doig donated a painting which was auctioned on the night and made £150.
“It was a really good night and means the playgroup is open for longer.”
The playgroup, which still meets at the Glen Halls, would continue to fundraise throughout the year, with a raffle being staged every two weeks, as well as sponsored walks and sponsored songs.
Jennifer said: “We had two more people join the playgroup the day after the article appeared in the Barrhead News.”
The group was grateful to the people who came along and the businesses who donated.
