Communities across East Renfrewshire fell silent yesterday in an act of remembrance as the world marked 100 years since the end of the First World War.

Barrhead, Neilston and Newton Mearns all held special commemorative services to the fallen on the special centenary.

On Sunday, residents, councillors, local dignitaries and veterans came together in poignant tribute to the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front. 

Events began with a service at Newton Mearns war memorial, Mearns Cross with a parade lining the streets at 10.50am ahead of a wreath-laying ceremony. 

In Neilston a service was also held at the war memorial adjacent to St Thomas Church on Main Street at 12 noon. 

Whilst in Barrhead, a parade marched through the streets in the afternoon leaving from the United Services Club at 2pm before a memorial service was held in Cowan Park.

At each event residents joined thousands across the country in pausing to reflect on the sacrifice given by so many during the Great War. 

Provost Fletcher said: “Remembrance Sunday gives us all an opportunity to mark the area’s fallen war heroes, honouring those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.
