A NEW Lidl supermarket will open its doors in East Renfrewshire this week.

The discount retailer has confirmed that its store in Fenwick Road, Giffnock, will open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8am on Thursday.

Shoppers are invited to attend and will be offered the chance to sample some of the store’s products throughout the day, along with exclusive deals and offers on selected goods for the first week of opening.

It was announced back in April that Lidl would be moving in on the spot formally occupied by the Whole Foods market, with the creation of 40 jobs.

The new supermarket forms part of the company’s ongoing expansion and regeneration plans in the UK.

It will feature an in-store bakery, longer-style tills with dual packing, customer toilets, baby changing and parking for both cars and bicycles.

Gordon Rafferty, Lidl UK’s regional head of property, told the Barrhead News: “We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing this new Lidl store to Giffnock.

“It is great for us to be able to create more jobs and investment opportunities in the area and we can’t wait to start serving our multi-award winning products to the local community.”

Lidl has its roots in Germany but established itself in the UK in 1994.
Since then, the firm has experienced continuous growth, with growing numbers of customers tempted by their ‘no frills, discounted prices’ approach to the retail market.

Lidl now has more than 700 stores, as well as 12 distribution centres, in the UK and employs more than 22,000 people.

Globally, the firm has a presence in 30 countries and employs more than 260,000 staff at around 10,500 stores and more than 150 distribution centres.
