A WARNING has been issued over the dangers of drinking fake vodka.

The Crimestoppers charity has joined forces with the Wine and Spirit Trade Association to spread the message that, when it comes to cheap spirits, things are not always what they seem.

Illegal alcohol may often appear to be legitimate by copying established branding.

The most popular spirit to be counterfeited is vodka – but fake vodka can include a cocktail of toxic chemicals with side effects that leave drinkers bedridden for days, suffering from blackouts and temporary blindness.

Dave Hunter, head of operations at Crimestoppers, said: “Drinking illicit alcohol such as knock-off vodka is extremely dangerous.

“It might seem like a good idea to buy at a bargain price but with such severe health consequences, let alone its illegality, it’s just not worth it.

“Our message is simple – please don’t get seduced by cheap alcohol. If it seems too good to be true, then steer clear.”

Anyone who suspects fake alcohol is being sold in a shop, pub or elsewhere is asked to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 234 6388 or use the online form at www.alcoholfraudline.com.
