TWO teenagers had a very lucky escape back in 2008 after a car smash ended up with them lying on a live railway line.

One teenager was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital suffering from a broken leg after the crash on Lochlibo Road, Barrhead, at 12.30am.

A driver was thought to have lost control of a car, causing it to smash into a wall before landing on the railway tracks.

Incredibly, two passengers were hurled through the windscreen and landed on the line.

A worried passer-by alerted the police, who dispatched an ambulance and fire crews to the scene.

A police helicopter was also brought in to help.

At the time, a spokesman for British Transport Police said: “The teenagers had a lucky escape.

“The last train from Barrhead leaves the station at 11.50pm, so they must have just missed it.

“In this case, we shut the line from Barrhead to Neilston while police officers and fire crews got the car off the track.

“Incidents like this are very rare and we acted swiftly to make sure that the line was closed until it was safe to be opened.”

A spokesman for Barrhead police added: “The teenagers were lucky that this crash was not fatal.

“There were four passengers in the car and one was taken to hospital suffering from a broken leg. Police officers closed off Lochlibo Road while fire crews removed the car from the railway line.

“Once again we would like to remind all drivers using Lochlibo Road to stick to speed limits and not overtake on the road, particularly at night.”
