MURDER squad detectives are carrying out a probe after a man was stabbed to death.

Streets were cordoned off and officers were standing guard at a property following the early morning incident.

Neighbours have spoken of their shock as a probe was launched after a man was stabbed to death in Wishaw.

Two streets Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, were sealed off following a disturbance outside a house in Morar Street, in the Pather area of the town.

Another area at Greenhead Road was also cordoned off as part of the investigation.

A 51-year-old man was rushed to University Hospital Wishaw in the early hours of Sunday but the victim could not be saved. He has been named locally as Kevin McGuire.

Those living around Morar Street have said they awoke to the police presence on Sunday morning but had not heard the disturbance during the night.

A large portion of the residential street, adjacent to Thornlie Primary School was still closed yesterday.

One neighbour said: “We didn’t hear a thing. We just woke up in the morning and the police were everywhere.

“People are saying online that he was stabbed. Thank god the schools are off and kids don’t have to see this.

“This area used to be quiet, we’ve stayed here for five years, but it’s getting worse. The past two years we have started to see more issues.”

As well as this address, a property on Greenhead Road was sealed off by cops.

Neighbours there also spoke of their shock, calling the news “disgusting”.

One said: “We were in but didn’t notice anyone going out - we sleep ‘round the back. This is quite a quiet street.

“I didn’t think he (the resident) was the type to get into bother but I suppose we don’t know him very well.”

Another added: “It is disgusting, terrible for those living here. I grew up in this area and I am appalled. It’s just shocking. “

Police have now confirmed the death as suspicious and that a post-mortem would establish the exact circumstances.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Around 12.30am on Sunday, October 14, a 51-year-old man was seriously injured following a disturbance outside a house in Morar Street, Wishaw.

“He was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Wishaw where he later died.”

“A post-mortem will take place in due course to establish the cause of death which at this time police are treating as suspicious.

“Enquires are ongoing.

“Police are in attendance at Greenhead Road as part of an going enquiry.”
