BARRHEAD High pupils were the stars of the show back in 2008 at an exciting painting competition...all the way over in Russia.

A delegation from St Petersburg made the epic voyage to attend a celebration of arts and culture at Eastwood Park Theatre Gallery.

The special guest was Russian Consul Mr Kolotov, who was joined by the rest of the Russian delegation, led by Margarita Mudrack, chair of the St Petersburg Association for International Cooperation, as they were formally welcomed by East Renfrewshire Provost Alex Mackie.

The main focus of the afternoon was the judging of the artistic competition for local schools, dubbed Getting to Know Russian Art.

The prestigious Russian Museum in St Petersburg set the guidelines for the competition, providing the school pupils with names and works of Russian artists such as Repin and Ana Zousky.

The museum created beautiful certificates signed by the director which were presented to all participants by Provost Mackie and Consul Kolotov.

May McMaster said at the time: “The overall theme for the day celebrated that, in getting to know and understand each other’s national art and culture, respect and understanding are fostered.”
