COFFEE mornings have taken place in Barrhead as part of a nationwide charity event.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, run by Macmillan Cancer Support, took place across the UK last week, with schools and organisations across East Renfrewshire playing their part.

Events run by the Market Place at Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire and Railway Cottage Nursery took place, with both proving big hits with the community.

Held on Friday, September 28, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer which, in 2017, raised more than £27 million.

Dozens of local people turned out at events in Barrhead, with other events in schools also held throughout the week.

The first coffee morning for the good cause took place in 1990, with events continuing since.

Over the past 28 years, more than £200m has been raised by local events such as these.

Macmillan Fundraising boss Emma Jackson said: “At Macmillan we know that cancer can affect every aspect of a person’s life, from their day-to-day living and relationships to their finances and mental health.

“It takes a community to care for people with cancer. Macmillan’s ambition is to be there for everyone with cancer when they need it most – but this cannot be achieved alone.

“No matter how big or small, every coffee morning changes lives.”
