THE BARRHEAD 10k took the town by storm this week in 2008 as hundreds ran through the streets while friends and relatives cheered them on.

The race, then in its second year, was even bigger than the previous year’s event, with over 300 taking part - and organisers were delighted with the level of interest.

David Phee of Giffnock North made his way round the course in the quickest time — clear at 33.16 — ahead of Kilbarchan AC athlete and Barrhead resident Tom Hearle in 34.35.

Tom’s club-mate Leanne Hamilton was first senior woman home, and the only woman in the top 25, in a time of 38.45, while Scott Lawrie of Kirkintilloch Olympians was first junior home in 39.34.

Councillor Eddie Phillips of the organising committee said: “This is an achievement given that other events have full-time staff and resources. We have five volunteers.”

The race set off from Cowan Park at 10.30am and prizes were presented by running legend Lachie Stewart, who won the Commonwealth Games 10,000 metres in Edinburgh in 1970, beating then world record holder, Australia’s Ron Clarke.

Male and female winners received £100 each plus six months Action Zone entry. Other prizes were presented to first veterans and youths, and there was a host of spot prizes for other lucky winners, too.

Councillor Phillips said: “I think it is remarkable what can be achieved when community activists are determined. This race is here to stay and we hope numbers will go up every year. I’d like to think that we could also start a new Lachie Stewart on the road to a Glasgow medal in 2014.”
