IT was a sad day 10 years ago when Barrhead’s oldest resident passed away at the age of 108.

Janet Cairley – then the second-eldest resident in the UK – was surrounded by her family when she passed away at Millview Nursing home.

The mum-of-six and great-grandmother had spoken to the Barrhead News the previous year about her love of Irish crooner Daniel O’Donnell.

And the golden granny was ecstatic when Daniel took time out to sing one of her favourite songs down the phone and wish her a happy 108th birthday.

The exclusive live performance was just for Janet as one of the singer’s oldest and most devoted fans.

Speaking to the Barrhead News about her special treat from the singer she said: “That’s my boy. He sang a hymn to me over the phone.

“I was crying a wee bit. I was very happy to hear from him, it really made my day.

“I can’t recall a day without listening to Daniel sing. He’s helped to keep me young. He has such a lovely voice, it adds a spring to my step and is better than many medicines.”

Born in 1900, Janet grew up on a farm and worked hard looking after the animals there. She lived most of her married life in the Pollokshaws area of Glasgow and had six sons including twins, Andrew and Sammy, and three daughters.

Anne Moore, home manager of Millview Care Home, said: “We are all very sad that Janet has passed away.

“She absolutely loved Daniel O’Donnell and was delighted that he took the time to phone her personally.”
