The battle to be crowned Parliamentary Pub of the Year is hotting up as locals submit their nominations for their favourite boozer.

MPs from across Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire will submit nominations on behalf of their constituencies at the end of the week, with the race for some places not yet settled.

In Paisley and Renfrewshire South, Mhairi Black, has kicked off the nominations for the prize by putting forward the Paisley institution, The Bull Inn, in the town’s New Street.

The SNP MP said: “The Bull Inn is a fantastic pub – the staff are always so welcoming and the bar itself is a part of Paisley’s history. There are few pubs as well known and well loved as the Bull Inn and they absolutely deserve this recognition.”

In East Renfrewshire, the race is hotting up, as the Conservative MP Paul Masterton left it to his constituents to decide his nomination on social media.

When the competition was announced, an early two-horse race broke out between the Cross Stobs Inn, Barrhead, and the The Swan Inn, Eaglesham.

However, a late contender has joined the leaders after a swathe of nominations for The Killoch in Neilston were made over the weekend.

Residents can enter their favourite pub in the competition on the Mr Masterton’s Facebook page at https://en-gb.facebook.com/Masterton4EastRen/

The winner will be picked by Mr Masterton from the three pubs with most votes, with entries closing on Friday. He said: “We have so many fantastic pubs across East Renfrewshire, and I am confident whoever wins will stand a great chance of bringing back the national title.

“Time is fast running out to nominate your favourite, so make sure you get involved before it’s too late.”
