A DRINK-DRIVER who “could have caused absolute carnage” has been jailed for injuring a pedestrian in a crash.

East Renfrewshire man Andrew Hyslop, 33, lost control of his car after speeding round a corner.

He mounted a pavement, struck a wall, hit a set of traffic lights and damaged an electrical junction box.

During the accident, a member of the public was seriously hurt.

The incident happened in Crookston Road, Glasgow, on October 8, 2016.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court last week, Hyslop pleaded guilty to driving with 80 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit being 22mg.

He also admitted driving dangerously and at excessive speed, to which he failed to negotiate a bend and thereafter crashed and injured a pedestrian.

His defence lawyer told the court: “The world has moved on for Mr Hyslop since the commission of this offence.”

It was stated that Hyslop was addressing his alcohol issues, engaging with services and had always worked – making a valuable contribution to the community.

However, Sheriff Lindsay Wood told the accused: “You’ve got an appalling record.”

He noted that Hyslop’s criminal history included a previous drink-driving charge, as well as assault to severe injury and impairment.

Sheriff Wood stated: “It was an appalling piece of driving. You caused significant damage.

“There’s a public interest here – a significant public interest. There’s no alternative to custody.”

Hyslop, of Anderson Drive, Newton Mearns, was jailed for 10 months.

He was also fined £675, which was modified to an additional 28 days in prison, and disqualified from driving for five years.

Sheriff Wood told him: “You could have caused absolute carnage.”
