EAST Renfrewshire residents are being encouraged to join a sponsored walk to help combat climate change.

The Moderator of the Church of Scotland, the Right Reverend Susan Brown, is among those who have already signed up to join Christian Aid supporters as they take part in the charity’s annual Power Walk.

The event will be held at Whitelee Windfarm, on Eaglesham Moor, on Saturday, August 25.

Starting at 11am, walkers will set out for a trek that will raise funds to support Christian Aid’s efforts to tackle climate change.

Those taking part will also be able to hear from people such as Gertrude Hamooya on how climate change is affecting communities around the world.

A small-scale farmer from Zambia who grows maize and groundnuts and keeps free range chickens, Gertrude is learning how to safeguard her farm against the effects of climate change, with Christian Aid’s support.

The walk will raise awareness of Christian Aid’s campaign to push the Scottish Government to commit to end Scotland’s contribution to climate change within a generation.

The charity is calling for the setting of targets to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest and for Scotland to cut emissions by 77 per cent by 2030.

Sally Foster-Fulton, head of Christian Aid Scotland, said: “We welcome the news that Susan will be joining us for our annual Power Walk at Whitelee Windfarm to help raise funds for Christian Aid and highlight the issues surrounding climate change.

“We hope people will join us for what promises to be a fun, educational and inspiring event.”
