AN unemployed transgender woman has been inundated with messages of support, but is still awaiting a job offer, after sharing her story with the Barrhead News.

Professional chef Michelle Murphy revealed last week that she has been out of work since the sudden closure of Snooks Steakhouse and spoke of her struggle to find employment due to transphobia.

And her appeal to potential employers to give her a chance went nationwide with an appearance on BBC Radio Scotland on Thursday.

Michelle told Good Morning Scotland: “One interview I went to, they looked at me, spoke to each other and then told me the position wasn’t available.

“I was discriminated against at another company, where I was told ‘no, we don’t take your kind of people’.

“A lot of positions I’ve been applying for, I’m actually overqualified for. I’m looking for anything because I’m on Jobseekers at the moment. But I just feel like I won’t get anything, honestly.

“My message is to please give me a chance. I’m very qualified, look at my CV, I work very hard. Please, I need a job.”

Michelle has received numerous emails and Facebook messages from readers wishing her well and directing her towards job adverts.

However, although she welcomed the support – and the trip to the BBC studio certainly lifted her spirits – she confirmed that the job search continues.

Michelle said: “I’ve had a few interviews, but no luck yet. And with getting my make-up done and travel expenses, it can cost me about £40 per interview.

“I’m still trying but I get very disappointed and disheartened.”
