AN East Renfrewshire Primary School has been lauded for its work on bringing the world into the classroom.

Neilston Primary has received a foundation level International School Award by the British Council after a ceremony at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh.

Three teachers from the school travelled to the event where staff were congratulated on their work by Deputy First Minister John Swinney.

Staff and pupils at Neilston have been recognised for the international ethos embedded throughout the school.

Modern languages teacher Lindsay Allen said: “I am absolutely thrilled that Neilston is once again receiving recognition for the pupils’ international work.

“It is more important than ever that pupils are encouraged to explore the wider world both linguistically and culturally, and this award marks the beginning of our journey to embed an international ethos across the school.”

Mrs Allen was one of the three teachers who travelled to Edinburgh for the ceremony, where she was joined by the school’s Mr Curley and Mr Bonnar.

The school’s work on promoting relationships with countries across Europe and further afield was highlighted, with examples of the children’s work on display at Dynamic Earth.

Among this work, the school is the only one in Scotland currently partnering with the University of Glasgow on a project funded by the Portuguese Government to promote the language. This adds to work with the international education agency Erasmus+.

The International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education.

Stephen Hull, senior project manager at the British Council, said: “The school’s dedication to internationalism is enriching education for its pupils by bringing an essential global dimension to learning and encouraging the development of skills children need to be global citizens of the future.”

The award is now available worldwide in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Pakistan.

Around 5,500 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since 1999.
