CARING pupils from Barrhead were getting creative for a good cause in 2008.

Springhill Primary kids were delighted when two local politicians dropped in to help them send a very special postcard.

Jim Murphy MP and MSP Ken MacIntosh joined pupils at the school in ‘sending a friend to school’ – a campaign that aimed to highlight the 72 million children worldwide who receive no education.

Primary seven pupils at Springhill took part in the world’s biggest lesson which saw 7.5 million children take part throughout the world.

They organised events for fellow pupils to highlight the issue and they chatted about the advantages of school and what they would have missed out on if they had the opportunity to attend school.

Mr Murphy said: “It was fantastic to take part in this special campaign by the pupils of Springhill Primary.

“The cards highlight just how important a part school plays in helping give children throughout the world the best chance in life.

“I congratulate the pupils for leading the campaign and making sure this issue is on minds of the public and politicians.”

Mr MacIntosh added: “The pupils deserve a great deal of credit for the way they have organised the campaign and for the consideration they are showing for the millions of children who do not have the opportunity of an education.” The pupils themselves also had a great time taking part in the initiative.

P7 Pupil Taylor Pattison said: “I enjoyed standing up in front of the whole school and talking to them in the World’s Biggest Lesson. I hope that all children in the world get the chance to go to school by 2015.” Stuart Logan P7 added that he also enjoyed taking part and designing his postcard.
