Families enjoyed fun in the sun as the biggest event of the year returned to Barrhead in 2003.

Hundreds of people flocked to Cowan Park for the first Barrhead Gala Day to take place in two years.

And perfect weather greeted those who went along to enjoy the various attractions on offer.

The day kicked off with a parade of floats put together with great effort by the area’s school pupils.

Carlibar Primary took the coveted trophy for Best Float, with St Mark’s Primary claiming runner-up spot, thanks to their eco-themed float, and the Salvation Army in third place.

Radio show host Derek McIntyre was also on hand to entertain the crowds as various competitions took place.

Ten-month-old Allana Ryan, of Main Street, Barrhead, was the Bonnie Baby winner, with three-year-old Kerry McShane, of the town’s Fenwick Drive, in second place.

Top Toddler was 17-month-old Niamh Junner, of Gateside Road, while 23-month-old Mathew Weir, of Weir Avenue, was runner-up.

Councillor Allan Steele refereed a seven-a-side football match involving Barrhead schoolkids, which saw the B-team from St John’s Primary taking the title.

Other attractions included a dog show, with young rottweiler Tia winning both the Best Puppy and Best in Show titles, much to the delight of her proud owner Isobel Nicol.

Tia also went on to win Best in Show.
