Children at a Barrhead school have proven themselves as maths whizzes after being crowned champions of an annual competition.

The Cross Arthurlie Primary pupils came out on top in the 2018 East Renfrewshire Spring Maths Contest, which saw nearly 3,000 youngsters from 22 schools putting their mathematical skills to the test.

Kids worked individually in their class groups to answer up to 1,000 maths questions each, customised to match their abilities, over the course of the tournament.

Primary 7-2 at Cross Arthurlie emerged as winners with a score of 921 correct answers.

It’s estimated that a total of one million questions were answered by kids in East Renfrewshire during the week-long match-up.

Councillor Paul O’Kane, who presented the winning team with their trophy, said: “Congratulations to all the pupils across East Renfrewshire who have performed so well in these maths challenges.

“Maths is so important for the development of our children and young people and it’s fantastic to see it being embraced across all our schools.

“Ensuring it is being taught in a fun and engaging way is key to pupils developing a lifelong interest in the subject and this contest has certainly fired pupils’ imaginations.

“I was delighted to present the overall East Renfrewshire trophy at Cross Arthurlie Primary, whose pupils certainly excelled and are a credit to the school.”

Andrew Hall, CEO of event organisers Sumdog, added: “Digital technology is becoming an increasingly important tool for teachers and pupils in the classroom and, used properly, we believe it can make a real and meaningful contribution towards encouraging learning and improving attainment.”
