BARRHEAD was transformed into the Far East as primary school pupils took part in a Scottish Opera performance.

Children at Cross Arthurlie Primary were invited to take centre stage in Dragons of the Western Sea as part of the school’s role as a Confucius Hub.

This involves the promotion of both Chinese language and cultural lessons throughout the curriculum.

Cross Arthurlie Primary had been working on music and songs for the opera for more than two months before the show came to the school.

After just a morning working with Scottish Opera staff, the children were ready to take to the stage.

Joanna Thomson, class teacher responsible for Mandarin and Chinese curriculum, said: “The whole experience was vibrant, engaging and a complete success.

“The children really had an amazing day.”

Scottish Opera, which is also a Confucius Hub, was delighted to team up with the school to stage the show.

As part of its work to promote Chinese culture, Scottish Opera has written and created several educational experiences, as well as the ornate costumes worn by the pupils.

The show itself focuses on ancient China’s first exploration of the west, with the actors visiting India, Africa and Persia throughout the performance.
