POLITICIANS have asked for clarity over the future of an East Renfrewshire store following speculation it is to close.

Eastwood MSP Jackson Carlaw and East Renfrewshire MP Paul Masterton have asked Watt Brothers what the firm’s plans are for its Clarkston branch.

The company’s accounts show that, in the last year, it made a £750,000 loss on group sales across its 11 stores, despite turnover of more than £21million.

Revenue rose 10 per cent through new shops in Port Glasgow and Falkirk but the firm had to deal with higher costs as a result.

Mr Carlaw said: “I appreciate the need of Watt Brothers to best restructure the company to ensure it continues long into the future.

However, my primary concern as a local MSP is to protect local jobs and prevent an empty unit in an otherwise revitalised Clarkston high street.”

Mr Masterton added: “I would welcome clarity on the future of the store in Clarkston as matters seem to be up in the air.

“Protecting local jobs and offering any appropriate support to the company is at the forefront of my mind at this difficult time for both staff and management.”
