VILLAGERS are up in arms over a lack of respect shown by dog walkers who are allowing their pets to poop on family graves.

There have been complaints about dog fouling at cemeteries across East Renfrewshire, with animal owners being accused of showing a lack of respect for the dead.

At a recent meeting of Neilston Community Council, a number of residents hit out over the “disgraceful” behaviour of some dog walkers who are accused of showing total disregard for those who are grieving.

Members of the community council reported there have been several people allowing their pooches to poop at Neilston cemetery, with animals also seen urinating on headstones.

Concerns have now been raised about the potential danger of damage to the graves.

Neilston councillor Paul O’Kane said: “Dog fouling is something that is regularly a problem in the village.

“People not cleaning up after their dogs in the cemetery has been an issue before and we managed to get signs put in last year to help with this.

“It is understandable that people want to take their pets here and go for a walk, as it is a lovely and peaceful area.

“Unfortunately, this will be a small minority of people who are ruining this for everyone and something more needs to be done.”

Some community council members have now suggested the introduction of a ban on all dogs within cemetery grounds to try to prevent any further upset being caused.

An East Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “Dog fouling is a particularly unpleasant occurrence and something we find as disappointing as our residents.

“Our wardens’ presence on patrols leads to dog owners picking up after their pets and, therefore, it can be difficult to catch offenders in the act.

“While these patrols are designed to identify and issue enforcement notices, their ultimate aim is to encourage this important change in behaviour.

“We also conduct plain-clothes operations in areas that residents tell us they have concerns about.

“We take dog fouling seriously and encourage our residents to be responsible dog owners and help keep East Renfrewshire clean for everyone to enjoy.”
