The fate of Eastwood Leisure Centre is to be considered by East Renfrewshire’s residents.

Four options have been laid out in a public consultation to shape the future of the facility.

Council chiefs are prepared to spend around £28million to build a new state-of-the-art centre.

But residents are being given the chance to save the existing complex for as little as £49,000 per year, which would involve fixing maintenance problems as they arise.

Other options include an £11m plan to address the current repairs backlog while installing a new pool, and a £15m proposal to transform the existing facility into a modern leisure space.

Councillor Tony Buchanan, council leader, said: “It is important that we develop the very best facilities we can for our residents and we want to find out exactly what the public want from a modern, fit-for-purpose leisure centre.

“We need to consider all options before considering the best way forward, so we want to hear the public’s views to allow us to take the next steps in this process.”

The first option would require no large-scale spend, with repairs being carried out reactively.

On this option, Councillor Colm Merrick said: “It’s not considered to be a long-term solution. It’s anticipated that a major failure could occur within the next five years.”

Another option would involve spending £11m to fix existing problems, while upgrading the gym, changing rooms, Carmichael Hall, Eastwood Theatre and installing a new swimming pool.

Mr Merrick confirmed this would mean closing the hub for up to a year.
A third choice would see £15m spent redeveloping the site.

All the maintenance issues would be addressed, with a new swimming pool, an upgraded gym space, studios, a four-court sports hall and new changing rooms added.

Under this proposal, a poolside sauna and steam room, reception area, soft play space and outdoor play area would be installed but, again, this would mean the hub being closed for up to a year.

The final option is to build a new facility that would be almost three times the size of the existing centre.

Within this site, the council said there would be potential scope to have a competition-equipped swimming pool with a spectator area.

There is potential for a gym, state-of-the-art changing facilities, a minimum of six badminton courts, two studios, four outdoor five-a-side football pitches, a conference suite, a play area, a library and 210 parking spaces.

The seven sites that could be considered if the public opt for a new build are Broomburn Park, Woodfarm Pavilion and playing fields, Overlee Pavilion and playing fields, Braidbar, Rouken Glen Park, Shawwood Park, in Newton Mearns, and Eastwood Park.
