Concerns have been raised over plans to shut another East Renfrewshire store.

It has been confirmed that the McColl’s store, which also provides limited post office services, at the Broom Shops area of Newton Mearns is to close.

This follows on from the announcement that the McColl’s store in Main Street, Barrhead, is also to shut, along with the post office based there.

The McColl’s branch in Mearns Road has been a fixture of the Newton Mearns community for more than half a century.

East Renfrewshire MP Paul Masterton and Eastwood MSP Jackson Carlaw have now written to management at McColl’s to seek confirmation that the latest announcement is part of a broader business strategy to move to larger, convenience-style stores.

They have also sought assurances from Post Office bosses that the decision will not further deplete resources in Newton Mearns.

Mr Masterton added: “It is surprising to see a long-standing store choose to close down.

“Residents have been impacted by Post Office closures throughout East Renfrewshire in the last year or so and, while counter services for the drawing of pensions and the like were not provided here, it remains important that this service, although limited, is not lost forever.”
